Red Heart Gleam Yarn Review

Red Heart Yarns recently released a new line of worsted weight yarn, Gleam, and it is like no other. With one look at the skein, you’ll notice the metallic thread running throughout. It takes this yarn to another level. Any time I see metallic threaded yarn, I immediately think scarf, cowl, or shawl. So I decided to make a cowl. I was working with the colorway Indigo. It is a shade of navy wrapped with a silver metallic thread. The fiber content of Gleam is 96% acrylic and 4% other fibers, which is the silver, gold, or copper thread, depending on the colorway. Because of that, this yarn feels very unique. The metallic thread is very soft and is woven throughout non-uniformly, similar to a 2-ply yarn. The acrylic section feels amazingly like a handspun wool yarn. It is very soft, squishy, and warm. It has a slight fuzz or pill to it but, in this case, it really adds to the charm. The two fibers work brilliantly together.

Each 100 gram skein of Gleam contains 169 yards. There are seven elegant shades to choose. Deep purple, rich teal, light and dark gray, beige, bold navy, and classic black. Although this is a soft, worsted weight yarn, it does work up slightly dense so I recommend an I (5.5mm) hook as the smallest hook to use. The sample pattern on the wrapper uses an L (8.0mm) hook. Also, this works up well for lacy, openwork patterns. It allows the uniqueness of the metallic threads to open up and shine through.

Here’s the free pattern that I made with 1 skein of Gleam. Just click the photo for the link.

Laundry care instructions are hand wash cold, lay flat to dry. Gleam retails at $4.99 a skein but I have found some great deals on Amazon!
